"Capitol Plus" Inside the Budget Crisis

Has it ever been more critical to have inside information on legislative budget and policy maneuvers?

For years, over 7,000 education practitioners, legislators and policy makers have been reading legislative analyst Tim Fitzharris's CDPI Bulletin. Fitzharris (at left) is a wily guide through the jungles of Sacramento, so it's very good news that he's now offering, through the Child Development Institute, "Capitol Plus," an insider's mix of facts, policy decisions, legislative buzz, fiscal explanations and questions. Annual subs are $49. "Capitol Plus," a web pub, will appear "as newsworthy information develops" -- every day, once a week, whenever there is an issue to be addressed, using the same philosophy Fitzharris has always honored: if there's something that needs to be said, we'll say it.

In "The Surgeon General's Vision for a Healthy and Fit Nation," a report issued January 28 from the office of the Surgeon General, Dr. Regina Benjamin, and highlighted by the sponsorship of First Lady Michelle Obama, we learn: "...Many people are not aware that rapid weight gain is one of the most common and alarming side effects of psychiatric medications for both children and adults. Youth aged 4 to 19 being treated with antipsychotic medications gained more than 7% of their total body weight in 12 weeks...The amount of time spent watching television is another association wih obesity in both children and adults." The report also has a section titled "Creating Healthy Child Care Settings," and gives a list of guidelines for both parents and providers in determining the "health rating" (our term) of a facility or program.
